For his second solo exhibition at SRISA Gallery of Contemporary Art in Florence, T-Yong Chung (Korea, 1977), presents a suggestive installation. The artist continues his research based on the recovery of materials and objects from diverse origins; which when reassembled, according to chance methodologies, take on new meaning.<\/h6>\n
With this work, the artist has decided to transform the exhibition space into an environment that seems frozen in a timeless dimension of religious import. In the center of the room, there are two small statues of Jesus and Mary, who stand dominate atop two Doric columns. The faces of both have been severed with a clean cut that invokes a surreal profile. Surrounding this on the floor is the unraveling of gilded wood made \u200b\u200bfrom old trappings of chairs.<\/h6>\n
The process of making created environments has allowed the artist to develop his experience in relation to the concept of assemblage. Even if the objects have been distorted of their original value, they still interact with each other and highlight the significance of the mise\u2013en-sc\u00e8ne, which is neither dramatic nor ironic. Chung blends together the individual parts in an organic manner, exploiting the tensions that are triggered between the forms and the symbolic value of the various elements.<\/h6>\n
Rather than search for the sacred meaning of the scene, or the almost apocalyptic impact of it, the aim seems to be much more about randomness, and it serves to amplify the sense of disorientation that it can produce. The room becomes a three-dimensional realization of that kaleidoscope that the artist likes to use in his visual language. The doubt triggered by this mechanism displaces the viewer towards an intimate dimension – one far from forms of judgment.<\/h6>\n
